Beginning in 1856 Scott served on the MISSISSIPPI RIVER as an engineer for the Minnesota Packet Company. He was a chief engineer of the Mississippi squadron during the [[CIVIL WAR]]. After the war, Scott was the chief engineer of the "Diamond Joe" Line between 1869 and 1878.
