CHERBA, Constance "Connie," (Dubuque, IA, January 4. 1949--July 10, 2026) The first daughter of Charles Richard and Mary Edith (Cox) Schweitzer, Connie graduated from DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL in 1967, and then attended the University of Iowa, California Lutheran College and LORAS COLLEGE before graduating from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1971 with a degree in psychology.
On August 16, 1969, she married Donald Leo Cherba at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST.
Connie was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Whether hunting for agates and arrowheads along Nine Mile, exploring the MINES OF SPAIN, touring CIVIL WAR battlefields, beach camping on the East Coast, hiking the mountains of Montana with Outward Bound or the trails of Italy’s Cinque Terre, cheering the girls through countless swim practices and meets, or hosting her grandsons each summer, she embraced every moment with curiosity, enthusiasm and love.
Connie was a genealogist, historian, author and avocational archaeologist. She enjoyed nothing more than looking into the past — whether it was paging through old documents or sifting through layers of dirt. As a result of her research, she published more than 350 articles in local, national and international magazines. For many years, she worked as the Dubuque Contributing Editor for Big River Magazine and as the senior feature writer for JULIEN'S JOURNAL. She also worked as a collaborative writer and editor, helping authors transform their ideas into finished books.
She was a former volunteer with the Finley Hospital Sunshine Circle, a member of Chapter IK, PEO Sisterhood, and a member of the Iowa and the Northwest Iowa Archeological Associations. Connie was a lifelong member and contributor at First Congregational UCC, where she served as Moderator, Vice-Moderator, Trustee and most recently as Church Clerk and Archivist.
