Prendergast began her teaching career in Parnell, Iowa. She was there one year before moving to Dubuque. She taught home economics at [[CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL]] AND [[JEFFERSON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL]] until 1949. She then moved to [[DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL]] as the department chairperson. In 1932 the combined cooking school classes under her direction prepared dinners for classes of students. (2) When [[STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL]] opened in 1970, she moved there as the department chairperson for the [[DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT]]. PRENDERGAST, Clare. (Alliance, NB, Aug. 27, 1903--Dubuque, IA, Oct. 2, 1976). Prendergast became the first state champion in Class B golf when she scored a total of 1,465 in 1939. (1) She was once runner-up in the women's city golf tournament.
