Artifacts including shovels, mining carts, and pick handles dating back to 1926 when the mines were closed remain underground. The deepest levels of the mines do not contain enough oxygen in which to work without breathing devices. | ||

LEVEL CREVICE MINE. One of many mines running under Dubuque. The Level Crevice stretches about three miles from beneath North Grandview Avenue westward, under BUNKER HILL GOLF COURSE and a portion of the property on which the administrative offices of the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT stand to the Asbury Square Shopping Center.
The Level Crevice is connected by passageways to a smaller but equally deep mine called the Booth-Carter farther north. Artifacts including shovels, mining carts, and pick handles dating back to 1926 when the mines were closed remain underground.
