(Davidson County, TN, 1808--Galena, IL,) Hughlett, his father, and brothers came to Galena in November, 1831. He was stationed in a fort at Elizabeth, Illinois during the BLACK HAWK WAR and later settled there. He served a term as deputy sheriff. Upon the death of his father who had a large number of slaves, Hughlett moved briefly to Galena where he gave slave their freedom. (1) Hughlett moved to Dubuque in 1835 or 1836 and began smelting LEAD..."
