WOODWARD, Frederick Robert, Sr. (Dubuque, IA, Dec. 4, 1911--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 20, 1993). After working as a feature-photo editor in Fort Dodge, Woodward moved back to Dubuque to work as a reporter for radio station KDTH. He then held administrative positions with the station including assistant and then general manger. He became vice-president of the TELEGRAPH HERALD in 1965. In 1975 Woodward became Chairman of the Board and President. When these two offices were separated, he continued as Chairman of the Board until his death.
Woodward compiled a long record of civic activity. In 1965 he served as a member of the executive committee of the Dubuque Community Services Survey Committee. He served as a member of the board of directors of the DUBUQUE BOYS' CLUB, CLARKE COLLEGE Development Council, UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE Development Council, DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, and chaired the United Way campaign of 1969-1970. A director of the Chamber of Commerce from 1962 through 1965, Woodward chaired the community renewal committee from 1963 through 1965.
For his efforts to prevent the Iowa Department of Natural Resources from constructing a road through the MINES OF SPAIN, Woodward was named Conservationist of the Year by the Dubuque County Conservation Society in October 1989.
