WASHBOARD. With a length up to 11 inches (27.9 cm), the washboard mussel lives primarily in large rivers with a good current. Occasionally it can be found in medium-sized streams in mud, sand, or gravel. A commercial species, it has nearly been wiped out in the area around Dubuque. The host fishes for the young include perch, bluegill, yellow perch and freshwater drum.
