USCA MARATHON CANOE AND KAYAK CHAMPIONSHIPS. Beginning on August 9, 2017, Dubuque played host to the 50th annual USCA Marathon Canoe and Kayak Championships. The five-day event was held near CHAPLAIN SCHMITT ISLAND. The nationals were open to all, although a registration fee and membership were required. Prime observation points included the start/finish line at the campground, the northern point of CITY ISLAND, and the gazebo by the turnaround at the ICE HARBOR.

Events scheduled were:

            Thursday--junior sprints, adult/youth sprints, and para-canoe and kayak sprints.
            Friday--adult marathons for sea kayak, C-2 mixed and C-2 pro-mixed in all age divisions
            Saturday--C-2 men's standard and K-1W ICF
            Sunday--competion in women's classes and men's C-1
