UPTON, Moira. (London, England-- ). After graduating from high school, Moira attended art classes in the hopes of becoming an illustrator for children's books. Noticing an ice skater one day, she found upon trying the sport that she like practicing the spirals, spins and loops. She later auditioned for and was accepted as a professional skater by Holiday on Ice, a international touring company.

She toured with the group for four years presenting programs through Europe, Greece and Turkey. It took six weeks to prepare for a program. The choreographer determined all the routines before the cast arrived. Rehearsals began at 9:00 a.m. and continued until 5:00 p.m. with an hour for lunch.

During her four years with the group, Moira appeared in at least nine performances each week. During the Brussels World Fair in 1958, she had the opportunity of skating with the famed Sonja Henie. In 1959 she met her future husband while rehearsing for a program in Sioux City.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Upton moved to Dubuque where in 1964 he was Executive Vice President of the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce.
