UNDERWOOD TYPEWRITER COMPANY. The Underwood Typewriter Company was an American manufacturer of typewriters headquartered in New York City, with manufacturing facilities in Hartford, Connecticut. Underwood produced what was considered the first widely successful, modern typewriter. By 1939, Underwood had produced five million machines. (1)

The 1929 Dubuque City Directory listed 137 W. 7th.

The 1937 Dubuque Consurvey Directory listed 201 W. 9th.

The 1948 Dubuque Classified Business Directory listed the Underwood Corporation at 606 BANK AND INSURANCE BUILDING.
