SOCIAL SECURITY. The first benefit checks for eligible retired workers were mailed on February 1, 1940 to an estimated 1,000,000 Americans. Estimates of the combined benefits of a "retired workers and his wife" if she was also over 65 ranged from $15.00 to $61.20 per month and for a single person from $10.00 to $41.60. A widow regardless of age with one dependent child under 16 or 18 if in school ranged from $15.00 to $61.40.
