SELIG, Karen
SELIG, Karen. (Tokyo, Japan- ). Selig rose to prominence in Dubuque as the coordinator for the YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (Y.W.C.A.) Battered Women Program. As women met with an advocate at the shelter, Selig, a professional counselor, served as a child advocate. (1) She began work in the program as a volunteer in February 1985. By July 1986, Selig was the advocacy supervisor, and six months later she became the coordinator. (2)
Beyond her work in the program, Selig led community workshops on violence in women's lives, self-esteem, and stress management. She resigned her position in 1989 to become a minister. (3)
Selig received a Y.W.C.A. Women of Achievement Award in 1987. In 1989 she was named chairwoman of the American Baptist Church's public policy team, a national committee responsible for placing public policy and social issues before the church.
