In 1900 this QUEEN ANNE ARCHITECTURE home was built with an unusual grey pressed brick patterned in contrasting shades. The exterior fixtures include green glazed tile roof, front gable with an elaborate Palladian window, and broad veranda with patterned tile floor. Preserved inside are hand-painted walls and original woodwork.
Architect Fridolin HEER, designer of the DUBUQUE COUNTY COURTHOUSE, designed this home for Nicholas J. SCHRUP, Sr., Dubuque's leading financial figure at the turn of the century. Schrup founded the AMERICAN TRUST AND SAVINGS BANK, served two terms as state senator, and was knighted by the King of Belgium for his contributions to relief efforts in Belgium during WORLD WAR I.
Mr. Schrup's two unmarried daughters lived in the home until 1950. They then gave the house to the ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE as a convent. Since 1972 it has been used as a group home, a law office, and finally apartments and rented rooms. In 1988, the home was purchased, renovated, and redecorated to become The Mandolin Bed and Breakfast Inn. The unique name comes from a picture of a mandolin in a stained glass window near the staircase.
