SCHMITT, Melchior. (Germany, July 31, 1855--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 30, 1926). Schmitt came to the United States in 1880 and settled in Dubuque. He married Otillia Keppler and their family grew to include five sons and two daughters.

For many years he operated a MELCHIOR SCHMITT, a wholesale and retail liquor business and bar. In 1923 he became the owner of the SANITARY BUTTER STORE.

Schmitt and his family were members of St. Mary's parish. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Aloysious Society, and the ROMAN CATHOLIC MUTUAL PROTECTIVE SOCIETY OF IOWA.
