SCHMID MANUFACTURING COMPANY. Organized in 1891 for the purpose of manufacturing casket hardware, the Schmid Manufacturing Company's factory and office were located at 17th and Elm STREETS.

The 1899-1900 through 1922 Dubuque City Directory listed 18th and Washington. Until 1900 George Schmid was in partnership with his brother O. M. Schmid. For unknown reasons, the partnership dissolved in 1900 with George Schmid deciding to relocate to California. After a year, he reconsidered and returned to Dubuque to resume the business. (1)

The 1939 Dubuque City Directory and 1942 Dubuque Classified Business Directory listed 260 E. 18th.

The company employed twenty-five personnel who earned $20,000 annually in 1911. The company in the same year announced its annual income as $75,000. The company produced casket handles, plates and ornaments. Goods produced in Dubuque were shipped throughout the United States, South America, Cuba and Mexico.
