SCHMID, James A. (Dubuque, IA, July 1, 1923--Dubuque, IA, Feb. 10, 2001 ). James Schmid graduated from LORAS ACADEMY and Notre Dame University. He joined CRESCENT ELECTRIC SUPPLY COMPANY on July 1, 1944. His father Titus B. SCHMID had founded the company in 1916. Working with his brothers in the business, James became the company president in August, 1974 and in November, 1992 rose to chairman and chief executive officer.

Schmid was chairman of the finance committee for the National Association of Electrical Distributors for eight years. He joined the board of DUBUQUE BANK AND TRUST COMPANY in 1957 and served as its chairman from 1982 until 2001. He was a founding director of HEARTLAND FINANCIAL USA, INC. in 1981 and served as chairman of its board from 1990 to 2001. Schmid was a member of the Northeast Iowa Council of Boy Scouts and served as its president in 1967. He was a founding member of the 990 Club of the DUBUQUE SHOOTING SOCIETY.
