PIUS BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION
PIUS BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION. Pius Benevolent Association composed of Germans identified with ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH was formed around February 4, 1855 and filed its articles of incorporation on the January 28, 1858. For some time after that date, the Association was inactive and was comparatively unimportant.
In the spring of 1876, it was revived. The membership increased to 180, who participated in the benefits and privileges.
The objects of the Association including caring for the sick and burying the dead was not limited to members. The initiation fee was fixed at from $5 to $12, according to the age of the applicant. Fees of $3 were collected each year. When sick, each member received $4 per week, and, if death resulted, the family was entitled to receive $400.
Meetings were held monthly, on the second Monday, in St. Mary's School.
