NORTHWOODS LEAGUE. An NCAA-sanctioned summer baseball circuit. The Northwoods League brought organized baseball back to Dubuque in 1994. Top Division I underclassmen who had completed their college seasons joined the Dubuque Mud Puppies to get accustomed to wooden bats and show their talents to professional scouts.

The Mud Puppies played three seasons at Petrakis Park, a city-operated facility. They did not contend in any of their three seasons and were above the .500 mark just two days in the team's history. George MacDonald, league president at the time, said the Mud Puppies lost between $15,000 and $20,000 while operating under a budget of $125,000 in each of their three seasons. The club often attracted fewer than one hundred fans. Strong backing from the business community offset poor attendance.
