NORTHWESTERN DEMOCRAT. The Northwestern Democrat was started in 1850 by V. Hanf, publisher, and John H. THEDINGA, director of editorial matter. The paper was intended as a German language publication and quickly became the accepted news source for German Democrats in Iowa.

In 1851 a Mr. Eickoff, an acquaintance of Peter KIENE, Sr. and V. Hanf, joined the paper as the editor. He later moved to New York to become the editor of the Staats Zeitung, the leading German newspaper in the United States.
