NEW JEFFERSON HOUSE. The 1870-1871 Dubuque City Directory gave the address of this business as the northeast corner of 5th and Clay.

In 1872 John G. KNOERSCHILD became the proprietor of the hotel which was then called the Kaufmann House. (1) Among the improvements noted in the establishment was the replacement of the "trough arrangement elevated several feet from the ground with a marble wash stand with an abundant supply of water which reaches every part of the house and stables." (2)

The 1873-74 Dubuque City Directory listed a boarding house on the east side of Clay between 5th and 6th.

The 1874-1875 through 1911-12 Dubuque City Directory stated that this business was located at 524 Clay. In 1911 the business was called the New Jefferson Hotel.
