NEUMEISTER, Mary Helen. (Port Arthur, TX, Sept. 9, 1918--Dubuque, IA, Feb. 24, 2011). Mary Helen Rode earned her teaching degree from the University of Nary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. She married William C. Neumeister while he was stationed in the Navy, and they moved to Iowa while he attended Iowa State Veterinary College. She taught first grade.

They moved to Dubuque where he established his practice. Mary Helen served as the president of the YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (Y.W.C.A.) and was a member of its board of trustees for many years. She was also one of three women who co-founded the Battered Women's Program of Dubuque.
