MIDWEST COMMUNICATIONS, INC. Internet provider. In 1997 Midwest Communications located at 241 Main in Dubuque was the principal provider of Internet access in the Tri-State region. The company was begun in April 1995 when Ed Larson and Rick Downs, interested in expanding business opportunities joined with Ryan Braun and J.D. Butt, then both juniors at STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL.

By 1996 the corporation had experienced a 6000% increase in cash flow and a 1200% increase in customer base. Beginning with three employees, in 1997 the company had fourteen full-time equivalents. A regional provider, MWCI provided dial-up services used by most individual customers, dedicated access, and Web site development. The company was the first to offer Integrated Switch Digital Network (ISDN) in the area.
