MEYER, John L. (Dubuque, IA--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 3, 1971). “Dubuque’s Mr. Tennis.” Meyer was a social studies teacher and tennis coach at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL from 1937 until 1971. His tennis playing career included ten city championships and three Iowa Conference singles titles while a student at LORAS COLLEGE. He brought tennis to Senior as the school’s first major sport and led the Rams to several state finals.

Meyer's role in beginning the city’s summer recreational tennis program allowed him the opportunity of working with tennis athletes from all the city’s schools. He supervised the Dubuque Recreation Department's summer tennis program for twenty-three years.

In 2008 after a year of fund-raising and planning, a plaque was unveiled naming the tennis facility at Senior High School the Johnny Meyer Courts.
