MCCAULEY, Michael S. (Davenport, IA, Oct. 21, 1936--Dubuque, IA, Sept. 9, 1999). McCauley was the youngest son of Michael Sylvester MCCAULEY and Bernice Fautsch McCauley. He attended St. Columbkille grade and high school graduating in 1954. He then attended LORAS COLLEGE and graduated in 1958 with a B.A. degree. In 1962 he graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law. (1)
In 1963, McCauley was appointed Assistant Dubuque County Attorney. He served as an Assistant Iowa Attorney General in 1965 until moving back to Dubuque in 1966 as a candidate for Dubuque County Attorney. He won the election by carrying all but one of Dubuque County's 37 precincts. (2) He served until 1970. He then continued to practice law in Dubuque, primarily as a single practitioner, and was the defense attorney in several high profile Dubuque murder cases. (Steven Moore and Herbert Schnee).
In 1967 McCauley was elected the Chairman of the Dubuque Democratic Party and helped organize the Young Democrats. (3)
In 1977 he joined the firm of Klauer, Stapleton and Ernst which was then renamed Klauer, Stapleton, Ernst, Gilloon and McCauley. (4)
In 1980, McCauley was appointed to fill the term of the county attorney who had been appointed to a judgeship in Dubuque.
McCauley married Jo Ann Dingbaum in May 1964 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville. One son, Patrick McCauley, worked for the federal government and had offices at Langley, Virginia.
