MAUSS, John J. (New Albin, IA, May 22, 1940- ). Chief, Dubuque DUBUQUE POLICE DEPARTMENT. Mauss, a member of the Dubuque Police Department since 1966, was appointed Chief of Police in 1985 succeeding Robert O'BRIEN. A graduate of LORAS COLLEGE with a bachelor's degree in political science, Mauss received an MBA degree from Drake University. He later attended the FBI National Academy and was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.

One of the major changes Mauss brought to the Dubuque Police Department was the start of an accreditation program for the department. He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Iowa Police Executive Forum, Iowa Task Force for Standards and Goals of Law Enforcement, and the FBI National Academy Association. Locally he belonged to the Dubuque Chapter of Serra International, Loras Alumni, Dubuque Archdiocese Pre-Cana Team and St. Anthony's parish. He retired on July 7, 2001 and became the coordinator of the police science program for the Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore, Wisconsin.
