MAUSOLEUM
MAUSOLEUM. In 1976 the first community mausoleum in Dubuque was planned for MOUNT CALVARY CEMETERY. While other mausoleums existed in the city for above-ground burial, the one being planned was the first of its size in the community.
Initially the mausoleum would contain 500 crypts each for one casket. This could be altered in the future to accommodate up to 1,500 crypts. The mausoleum was being constructed in part in response to a local Roman Catholic responses to a survey determining burial trends to help plan future cemetery needs. Constructed near the chapel, the mausoleum would feature open-air corridors between the six tiers of crypts which would be covered by a roof. Each crypt would be permanently sealed in the front with a granite stone with raised bronze lettering. The construction would use steel-reinforced concrete to meet stress standards in California to withstand earthquakes.
