MATTES, Joseph S. (Omaha, NB--Dubuque, IA, Aug. 30, 1981). Editor, TELEGRAPH HERALD. With experience as the former editor of the Michigan Daily and work with the Chicago Daily News, Mattes came to Dubuque in 1946 as the city editor, a position he held until 1953.

He left the paper to work for the Des Moines Register and Chicago Tribune as copy editor from 1953-1965 and the Financial Advisory Service from 1965-1966 and then returned in 1966 as the news editor of the Telegraph Herald. He served in this position until 1970. Beginning in 1971 and until his retirement in 1979, Mattes was the writer of the “Action Line” column.
