MAGUIRE, Daniel E.
MAGUIRE, Daniel E. (East Dubuque, IL, July 30, 1879--Dubuque, IA, Dec. 24, 1941). McGuire was a judge of the Nineteenth Judicial District of Iowa and chairman of the Dubuque County Democratic Central Committee. Active in Democratic Party politics, Maguire served as a delegate at large from Iowa to the 1924 Democratic National Convention in New York. He attended the 1928 national convention in Houston, Texas, with the same status. In 1940 Maguire represented Iowa's 2nd Congressional district as a presidential elector. (1)
An active participant in efforts to combat juvenile delinquency, Maguire was also director of CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBUQUE beginning in 1921. Through his efforts, the Dubuque BOY SCOUTS were kept active when the organization was about to be disbanded. Maguire was instrumental in securing federal funds to expand the National Youth Organization in Dubuque. He also served as chairman of the Dubuque NYA Advisory Council and was a founder of the Dubuque County Coordinating Council, a group of representatives from other organizations interested in youth. Maguire was serving his second term on the executive committee of the Iowa State Bar Association at the time of his death. His first political office was assistant county attorney. He was elected to the district court to succeed Judge Robert BONSON. Maguire served in this position for twenty-two years. (3)
Maguire was one of the charter members of the Dubuque Boy Scout Council when it was first chartered in January of 1917. Maguire, along with Superintendent of Schools James H. HARRIS and Dr. John V. CONZETT, formed the Court of Honor for the Dubuque Area Council that approved all awards for local Boy Scouts during the first years of the Scout Council's existence. (4)
