Loes, Nicholas. (Luxembourg (Europe), Nov. 26, 1852--Dubuque, IA, June 4, 1920). Loes taught for several years in the county school at Holy Cross and New Vienna. He was instrumental in organizing Sacred Heart parish in Dubuque.

In 1883, Loes was appointed deputy sheriff of Dubuque County. In 1889, he left this position to enter the wholesale liquor business which he continued for twenty-five years in Dubuque.
