LESTER, Earl
LESTER, Earl (Rock Island, IL, 1914--Dubuque, IA, 1991) Earl Lester was a taxi driver in Dubuque for many years. He was somewhat disabled after surviving a brain tumor in the 1940s and was not able to do the heavy labor he did in his teens. He came from a family of one sister and had 8 brothers. He had to quit school after 8th grade to support his family when his older brother Joe drowned working on a barge at the age of fifteen.
Lester was a self taught photographer and it was his passion. He even developed his black and white photos, but never learned to do color. One of his cameras often went with him in the taxi. His photos have often appeared on the Facebook entry-You Know You Grew Up in Dubuque. His daughter has also featured his work on her Facebook website--You Know You are From Dubuque, IA.
