LEITNER, James. (Dubuque, IA-- ). Leitner, son of Harold G. LEITNER and Roann (Schiessl) Leitner, was a graduate of STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL and LORAS COLLEGE. He joined TH Media as a part-time sports clerk in 1988, when he was still attending Loras. After several years as a TH sportswriter, he was promoted to sports editor in 1998.

He has several writing awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association and The Associated Press Managing Editors, and his work has been recognized by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. Earlier in 2015, his staff won the Best Sports Section award from the Iowa Newspaper Association. In that year the Iowa High School Athletic Association honored him with its News Media Award recognizing his contributions to the success of interscholastic athletic programs and other activities.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association News Media Award was presented to Leitner in appreciation for the many contributions he made to the interscholastic high school athletic program in Iowa. The presentation took place at halftime of the 2015 Iowa Class 3A state football championship game at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Recipients were nominated by members of the IHSAA's Board of Control.
