LAWTHER, William Jr. (Dubuque, IA, Jan. 22, 1874--Dubuque, IA, June 29, 1956). Lawther began work in the real estate department of FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF DUBUQUE and then served as a cashier from 1916 to 1927 when he became the bank's president. Lawther served as the president for over a quarter of a century until illness forced his resignation. (1)

Lawther was also associated with the KEY CITY STEAM CANDY COMPANY which was owned and operated by his father. Articles of incorporation for the WILLIAM LAWTHER COMPANY were filed at the DUBUQUE COUNTY COURTHOUSE on July 10, 1899. Those incorporating the company were William LAWTHER, Sr., Clem SHERIDAN, and himself. The company was capitalized at $150,000 and was to begin business on July 14, 1899. (2)

For many years, he managed a real estate business of his own and family business interests in Dubuque; Red Wing, Minnesota; and Grant County, North Dakota. (3) (4)

Lawther's community activities included his service as a trustee of the LINWOOD CEMETERY Association and forty years of service on the board of FINLEY HOSPITAL (THE). A charter member and founder of the DUBUQUE GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB, Lawther was the club's champion golfer many times over a twenty year period. (5)
