KEY CLUB. Selling liquor by the drink was illegal in Iowa prior to 1963. Taverns and restaurants attempted to regulate entry to their establishments by only admitting members who had their own labeled bottles of liquor on the premises. If police conducted raids, a "[hone tree" would be set in motion whereby each owner had a designated number of other owners to call and warn. Liquor was quickly removed until the police left the area.
