KAUFMAN, Alda. (Munich, Germany, Aug. 12, 1946-- ). Born of Latvian parents in Munich, Germany, Alda Kirulis Kaufman immigrated to the United States in 1951. A student at PRESCOTT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, she was permitted to remain inside and draw rather than attend recess. While a future in art might have been expected, she attended the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE with a double major in biology and chemistry. She worked for twenty-seven years as a medical technologist at MEDICAL ASSOCIATES CLINIC PC (THE) (1)

She studied watercolor painting under many nationally known artists. (2) Finding watercolor suited to her personality and talents, she experimented with new surfaces not normally used with watercolors and occasionally adding some mixed media. Although she painted a variety of subject matter, Kaufman preferred to concentrate on the local and familiar and liked to emphasize design in her works.

Kaufman brought a group of local artists together to form the Tuesday Group and was a member of the Iowa Watercolor Society and the Dubuque-based Iowa Plein Air Painters. She was a signature member of the Iowa Watercolor Society and Iowa Artists. (3) Her works are owned by MEDICAL ASSOCIATES CLINIC PC (THE), UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE, Grand River Center, LORAS COLLEGE, Wendt Center, FINLEY HOSPITAL (THE), The Mississippi River Museum, The Dubuque Racing Association, several local restaurants and banks, and many private collectors. Her paintings were featured on two JULIEN'S JOURNAL covers and published in the International Artist's book "100 Ways to Paint People." (4) The Dubuque Museum of Art featured her in a one-person show in 2012.

She painted with the local Tuesday Group since 1978 and was associated with The Art Studio at Fountain Park where she painted with six other Dubuque artists.
