U.S. Air Force Achievement Medal

Kaiser, Brian. (Dubuque, IA-- ). On September 13, 2001 during a 11,000-acre fire on the Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California, Kaiser single-handedly safe-guarded two mission-essential $8.5 million re-entry systems. After the fire cut off power and communications to the munitions storage area, Kaiser volunteered to remain on duty to perform an area security check.

During his check, he discovered the fire-suppression system in a munitions building had activated and was sending 628 gallons of water per minute on essential mission items. Kaiser moved property valued at more than $500,000 to a safe location and then blocked the flow of water from reaching two re-entry systems to be used for launch two weeks later.

For his heroic actions, Kaiser was awarded the U.S. Air Force Achievement Medal. At the time of his action, Kaiser had only been in the Air Force for a year and a half.
