JAMES COLLIER-1072 W. 3RD
JAMES COLLIER HOME. This QUEEN ANNE ARCHITECTURE home is thought to have been designed by Thomas CARKEEK between 1897 and 1901 on land purchased from James LANGWORTHY. The home was constructed next to that of Robert Hutcheson COLLIER, his father.
Since the Colliers were important lumbermen, many fine woods were used throughout the house. The reception hall and stairway featured quarter sawn oak which displayed the beautiful grain. The parlor had a fireplace of African mahogany. The dining room, also of oak, had a large built-in china cabinet with leaded glass which matched the rounded conservatory window. The second floor had much of the original plumbing and a bedroom with beautiful wainscoting. The third floor was trimmed in red birch. The home remained in the family until 1964. It was later divided into three apartments and then served as a bed and breakfast. It has been restored to a single family home.
