HOWARD, J. B.

HOWARD, J. B. (Carrick Fergus, Ireland, Mar. 17, 1830--Unknown). Howard's parents came to America when he was only a few months old and he grew up and received his education in the city of New York. He lived there until 1856 when he settled in Dubuque and began working in gas fitting and plumbing. (1)

Howard served in the CIVIL WAR. Returning to Dubuque, Howard and a Mr. McArthur leased the City Gas Works. Howard served as the superintendent. He was chosen Chief of the Fire Department and served in that position three years. He also served as city alderman, director and vice president of the DUBUQUE BUILDING AND LOAN ASSOCIATION, and director of the Dubuque County Agricultural Fair Association. (2) In 1883 he served as the president of the Western Gas Association. (3)
