HOLMES, Courtney
HOLMES, Courtney. In 2015, Holmes, a barber at Sparks Family Hair Salon, offered free haircuts to students who read to him at the Back to School Bash at COMISKEY PARK. Originally reported in TH Media, the event triggered a nation-wide response.
He was featured on "The Rachael Ray Show," interviewed by national news organizations, including USA Today and was scheduled to be interviewed by People magazine. Amanda Trotman, salon owner, said the salon intended to have a literacy day from 4 to 6 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month, where children could receive a free haircut while they read.
Little Free Library reached out to Spark Family Hair Salon to provide the salon with a free micro-library. The response from all over the country led to a partnership between Holmes, the salon, My Brother's Keeper and the COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GREATER DUBUQUE.
