HILL PRAIRIES
HILL PRAIRIES. Open areas, ranging from small patches to acres in size, found on forest-covered slopes within the city limits of Dubuque and throughout eastern Iowa. Looking first like man-made clearings, these hill or "goat" prairies are created from a combined southern exposure that dried the soil under a hot sun and a thin layer of soil deposited over bedrock. One such hill prairie may be found along Kaufmann Avenue in Dubuque near the intersection with Kane Street.
