HEART RECIPIENT. In May, 1983 it was considered unlikely that David Tone of Dubuque would live to see him 19th birthday. While getting a routine physical for the STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL wrestling team, doctor's discovered that David's heart was beating at twice the normal rate. He did not learn of the true seriousness of his condition until on the way to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. For the past two years, David's heart had become enlarged and weakened by cardiomyopathy--a disease which turned the heart muscle into fibrous tissue.

David's surgery in which he received a new heart was the 267th heart transplant at the center since the operations began there in 1968.

He survived the surgery, returned to LORAS COLLEGE and married his high school girlfriend, Maxine.
