GROTIELOCH. A vast swamp that once existed in northern Dubuque, "Grotoeloch" was formed by springs that constantly flowed down the hills in the area of present-day Diagonal Street. The waters were blocked by the slightly higher ground along Jackson Street. Spreading over the level ground, the waters created a stagnant slough that caused White Street to end in the late 1800s at 24th Street.
