GRODE, William F. (Dubuque, IA-- ). Encouraged by Father John S. BAUMAN, pastor of SACRED HEART CHURCH, Grode published the CATHOLIC PILGRIM beginning in 1893. A graduate of the DUBUQUE ACADEMY OF MUSIC, he had previously worked as a proofreader and typesetter for the Palmer-Winall Printing Company in Dubuque.

In 1900 he was appointed the state organizer in Iowa for the Catholic Order of Foresters. At the time, he was a member of the Marquette court of C.O.F. and held the position of recording secretary. (1) He was also a charter member of the Dubuque Council of the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. (2)

Grode eventually moved to Los Angeles, California, and resumed work as a proofreader for the Los Angeles Gazette.
