GOLDENROD
GOLDENROD. Launched in 1909, the "Goldenrod," 200 feet by 45 feet, was considered the best of all showboats for its time with steam heat and a well-equipped stage. The cast included ten actors in such performances as "The Spook," "The Cat and the Canary," and "Main Street Folks." Relying on a few posters he sent along the river ahead of his boat, Menke did away with the calliope, band concerts and the noon parade. (1)
Lost by original owner W. R. Markle by foreclosure, it was purchased in 1922 by Captain Bill Menke. From 1964-1990, it was owned by Frank Pierson and his heirs. From 1937-1962 it was tied up at St. Louis, Missouri. (2) Since that time, it has been downhill for the once fabulous boat. (3)
