GLEED'S BREWERY
GLEED'S BREWERY. Gleed's Brewery was a successor of the DUBUQUE JOINT STOCK BREWING COMPANY along South Locust in Dubuque. It was operated by Ambrose Gleed in 1872 when he leased the entire operation. In 1873 Gleed had his ale confiscated under the "Maine law" which prohibited the sale of all alcoholic beverages except for "medicinal, mechanical or manufacturing purposes." At the conclusion of a trial lasting three days in Fort Dodge, the court ruled in his favor and he returned to Dubuque in triumph. (1)
In 1876 the business closed. Gleed sold his property including his house and the one adjoining it for $3,000 in 1878. The family then moved to Australia. (2) In 1878 the brewery and equipment was purchased by John PIER. (1)
In 1880 the business was purchased by J. P. Rickert & Company. One of the first concerns was asking the city council to extend water mains to supply water for fire protection and brewing. (4)
