GIBBS, R.J.
GIBBS, R. J. (Unknown--Mar. 1875) Gibbs came to Dubuque in 1857 and later was in charge of installing the Dubuque water works. (1) He was listed among the principals of the Dubuque Water Company. (2) Pipes were laid within two years. (3)
Gibbs was also extensively engaged in the grain business here for many years and shipped the first carload of grain over the ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD. (4) Ironically in 1867 he was a leader among those who fought discriminatory freight charges made by railroads. (5)
