GENDER REFERENCES. In response to objections from some female council members, those elected to the city council after April 3, 1989 no longer had "man" added to the end of their political title regardless of their gender. The city council vote on the issue removed all gender references from the city code. Those elected to the council would be called "council members" under the rewritten ordinance.

References to "he" were also removed from the code for such positions as the city clerk, police officers, health officers, building occupants, permit holders, employers, the city manager, city treasurer and contractors. For several years, city legal staff had removed male-only references by using "he/she" or "his/her" when writing new ordinances.
