FUERSTE, Frederick, Jr. (St. Louis, MO--Iowa City, IA, Feb. 25, 2003). The doctor was described by his brother William FUERSTE as a "physician who could tie knots inside a matchbox" (TH editorial 03/08-2003). Frederick grew up in Dubuque and achieved outstanding success at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE and the University of Iowa. Graduating from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, he practiced in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Milwaukee, and St. Louis before returning to Dubuque. Frederick and his wife

In 1978 he was named Dubuque County Sight Saving chairman by the Iowa Society for the Prevention of Blindness. In addition for raising support for the Society, he was charged with distributing information to residents about blinding diseases, eye safety, and child eye care.

Of his family of six children, three. H. Hunter, C. Rommell, and Gretchen, followed their father's career path into ophthalmology.

He retired in March, 1995.
