FRANCES BROPHY AWARD. The award was begun in 1955 to honor volunteer service to TUBERCULOSIS control in Iowa and was presented by the Iowa Tuberculosis and Health Association.

The first person honored with the award was Mrs. Gailen Thomas who was nominated by the Dubuque County Tuberculosis and Health Association. She was honored for her efforts in organizing a countywide case register, employment of a full-time executive secretary and a detailed planning of several special x-ray programs. Mrs. Thomas served as president of the county association twice since the group was formed in 1941. She was the first president. In 1943 she was elected Christmas Seal Sale chairman when the Dubuque and rural county tuberculosis associations were merged.
