FLANAGAN, Michael A.

FLANAGAN, Michael A. (Dubuque, IA. June 6, 1841--Fort Benton, Chouteau County, MT, Feb. 21, 1906). A son of Matthew and Mary (McNarama) Flanagan, Michael was educated in the public schools of Dubuque and at Sinsinawa Mound College in Wisconsin. He operated FLANAGAN & CO., a grocery business in Dubuque, for two years, and then enticed by the gold excitement in Montana, crossed the plains and arrived at Virginia City, Montana in July 1866.

Flanagan finally settled at Fort Benton, Missouri. He was in the employed by T.C. Power and Brother as their bookkeeper. In 1875 he started out in the drug business being the pioneer in that line in Fort Benton. In addition to drugs and patent medicines, he also sold paints and oils.

In 1880 Flanagan received the appointment of postmaster which he held for more than twelve years. He had a ranch near the city and real estate within the corporate limits.
