DUBUQUE WORKERS' ACADEMY. In 2012 the DUBUQUE FEDERATION OF LABOR, in cooperation with the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, announced a six-week series of workshops open to Dubuque area union members, their families, and local progressive activists. The Workers' Academy was designed to strengthen the area labor movement through education about key political and economic issues facing working-class people.

Workshops were conducted by the University of Iowa Labor Center, labor historian and professor Ralph SCHARNAU, and Dubuque Federation of Labor President Bruce Clark.

Registration for the academy was free with participants asked to attend the entire series which was intended as a comprehensive program rather than individual classes. A two hour workshop was held each week featuring topics including.

 Common Sense Economics

 Lessons from Labor’s History in the U.S., Iowa, and Dubuque

 The Growing Class Divide

 Who Really Pays the Taxes and How Do We Protect the Common Good?

 Immigration and Workers’ Rights
